Does your English get better? 가 맞을까요?

최근에 일어난 변화에 대해서 얘기할 때는 현재진행형(present continuous)를 사용합니다.
따라서 Is your English getting better? 가 맞습니다.

이렇게 변화를 표현하는 동사들에는 다음과 같은 것들이 있습니다.

getting
changing
becoming
increasing
rising
falling
growing
improving
starting

흔히 Are you a student? 하고 물의면 I'm a worker라고 대답하곤 합니다.
문법적으로는 맞는 표현이지만 이렇게는 안쓰죠.

I work.
또는 I'm a consultant. I'm a doctor 라고 해야 맞는 표현입니다.

Collocations는 강조의 표현을 하기 위해서 같이 쓰는 단어들로써 이유는 없지만 누구나가 그렇게 쓰는 표현들입니다. collocations를 잘 사용하면 영어 표현을 좀더 자연스럽고 풍부하게 할 수 있습니다.

오늘은 그 중에 하나인 utterly refuse(완전히 거절하다)입니다. 왜 refuse(거절하다) 앞에 utterly(완전히)가 붙냐고요? 이유는 없습니다.

예문)

  • If her father utterly refuse to give her unto him, he shall pay money according to the dowry of virgins. (출처: USENET)
  • Mayor Lynch and the town council utterly refused the terms, to the surprise and anger of Lord Forbes.(출처: USENET)
